Tracing its beginning back to 1919, the Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW) is part of an internationally-recognized University with a long and proud history of graduating talented, focused, intelligent and committed men and women. Today, the School of Social Work specializes in educating master’s and doctoral students to improve the health and well-being of people across the lifespan, to eliminate poverty, to promote social justice and human rights, and to enhance the capacity of individuals, families, groups, communities, organizations and systems to promote social change.

The school is committed to education that furthers social and economic justice in the urban environment and strives to incorporate this commitment into its program and activities, particularly concerning the empowerment of oppressed groups. BUSSW recognizes the ever-changing demands on the profession and endeavors to meet them through the highest quality of teaching, scholarship, research, practice and political action.

BUSSW’s aim is to educate professional social workers with a long-standing interest in social justice and those new to the field who wish to explore the dynamic realm of Clinical Social Work and Macro Social Work Practice, and become leaders in a complex, diverse, and multicultural society. The School offers an integrated program of study, including clinical and macro social work methods. It emphasizes the engagement of personal and community strengths as fundamental to the understanding, treatment, and prevention of individual and social problems. Faculty members are in the forefront of practice, research and training and provide exciting opportunities for students to gain knowledge and apply skills with diverse populations in such areas as:
